i-Tree Eco & Database FAQs

What are the sources of data and monetary evaluations for i-Tree Eco?

The methods used for valuation of tree benefits can be found in the document Understanding i-Tree. To view the values currently being used in i-Tree, users can navigate to "Benefit Prices" table on the "Data" tab in i-Tree Eco. Users are encouraged to use customized local monetary values whenever they are available. Such localized values will be easier for users to explain and defend, and in general will be more accurate than regional generalizations that are used to create the i-Tree Eco default values.

Where do the weather data used in Eco come from?

All United States weather data come from the network of weather stations available from the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI). For users in the United States, fully supported countries and viable locations, weather station data will be automatically available to incorporate into Eco projects. Weather data for unsupported countries and locations is user submitted and so originates from many sources.

Eco has crashed or stopped working and/or I am unable to submit my project for processing. What should I do?

If you are having trouble submitting your project for processing, first make sure that you are operating on the latest version on Eco by navigating to the Support tab and selecting “Software Update”. If you find that your version of Eco is outdated, we recommend performing a complete uninstall of the older version of i-Tree Tools to avoid issues with outdated installations. You can request a download link by clicking on the latest .exe file here.

If the issue persists, be sure to verify that Eco has full upload and download privileges across all firewalls. If you are on a managed network like at a university or government office, have your IT department review this page. Finally, try submitting your project when connected to a different network and from a different computer if possible. If the problem persists, contact us at info@itreetools.org.

When submitting my project for processing, I receive a “System Error” message despite the upload bar showing 40% progress. What should I do?

Usually when processing stops at 40%, it indicates that i-Tree Eco is having trouble connecting to our server. It may be also possible that we are experiencing a server outage. More often it is because the user's computer firewall or a firewall on the user's internet (common in university, corporate, and government settings) is preventing i-Tree Eco from accessing the internet. Please make sure that i-Tree Eco has full permission to send and receive data through your firewall. If you are on a university, corporate, or government system you may need to contact your IT staff to ensure that i-Tree Eco has this type of access. You may direct them to this page for managed networks.

If you continue to experience issues please email us at the support address, info@itreetools.org, for additional troubleshooting.

What is the upper limit on how many trees i-Tree Eco can process?

i-Tree Eco has been tested on projects containing up to 500,000 trees. However, users have reported successfully running projects with up to 800,000 trees. If your project exceeds this number of trees, it may take several hours to import and process your project.

Is possible to view i-Tree Forecast results by species/tree diameter?

A. At this time it is not possible to parse out by species in Forecast as it was created as a form of stand table projection and therefore is best for growing cohorts of trees making up a population. If you are in the U.S., you may be able answer some of those questions using i-Tree Planting where you can specify tree species and size and model growth and benefits through time.

The species I am interested in is not in i-Tree - how can I have it added?

New individual species can be submitted for consideration through the i-Tree Database. If you have a large list of new species, please contact us at info@itreetools.org. We are no longer using cultivars in the species list as they created confusion and there was typically not adequate data to support models for individual cultivars. i-Tree is not appropriate for herbaceous plants or climbing type vine species and those species will not be accepted for integration.

How can I see which species and locations are in the i-Tree Database?

You can view locations and species that have already been integrated into the i-Tree Database by navigating to View Database on the i-Tree Database webpage. The full list of species can also be downloaded as a spreadsheet i-Tree Eco under View>Species List.

How do I submit pollution and/or precipitation data for my location?

On the i-Tree Database webpage, navigate to ‘Add to Database’ on the header and select the type of data you are looking to submit. You can find templates for pollution and precipitation submittal on this page under the i-Tree Database section. After submission, you will receive automated data validation result email asking you to correct any errors if applicable. You will receive an email notifying you when your data has been integrated, it may take up to 3 months for it to be available in i-Tree Eco. Note, we will begin accepting 2022 data in late 2024 or early 2025.
