General
What services does i-Tree provide and what are the costs?
i-Tree provides a suite of software tools to estimate the benefits of trees free of charge. Technical support is also free for most of our tools, excluding support for the i-Tree Research Suite and i-Tree API. We do not plant trees or provide funding for tree maintenance or planting activities. We do not provide funding for research but may be able to collaborate on projects on a case-by-case basis.
Which is the best tool to start with if I am new to i-Tree?
MyTree is the simplest tool to use and a great place to start. MyTree requires basic details about a tree, including species and diameter, along with tree location. It quickly summarizes the benefits a tree provides and their monetary value. MyTree is web-based and works in all modern browsers on computers and mobile devices internationally.
Which i-Tree tool should I use for my project?
The best tool for your project will ultimately depend on the goals and location of your project and your expertise. You can begin to familiarize yourself with the i-Tree suite of tools and their capacities by participating in an i-Tree Open Academy and reviewing the Video Learning library. This decision matrix can also help you decide on the best tool for your project.
Will i-Tree work on my Mac computer?
Most of the i-Tree tools are web-based and designed to be used through any modern web browser, including Safari. This makes most of the i-Tree tools available on Apple devices including iPhones and Mac computers.
The exception is i-Tree Eco which requires the installation on a Windows PC (System Requirements). However, many Mac users use a Windows emulator or dual boot system through software such as BootCamp, or Parallels. Additionally, it is possible to run i-Tree Eco on a cloud-based Windows PC using one of the many Desktop as a Service (DaaS) providers from any device with an internet connection including Macs.
Is i-Tree available in my country?
i-Tree Eco, i-Tree Canopy, and My Tree can be used globally with some limitations. i-Tree Eco has been adapted for use throughout Canada, Australia, Mexico, South Korea, Colombia, New Zealand, and most countries in Europe with the necessary species information, location information, and pollution and precipitation data preprocessed and available directly in the application. Additional individual city locations can be added to i-Tree Eco by local users. You can check if we have i-Tree Eco availability for your location on the i-Tree Database portal.
How can I use i-Tree in my classroom?
For teaching resources, including videos and teaching materials, visit our i-Tree Teaching Resources page.
How can I use i-Tree to advocate for tree planting or prevent trees from being cut down?
i-Tree Tools can show the current and forecasted benefits of any tree, no matter the age. The calculations will use the size and health of the tree to show current and potential benefits and demonstrate the monetary value of planting trees or keeping mature trees in place. With tools like i-Tree Planting and i-Tree Design you can even project how long it would take you to recoup the benefits lost to tree removal when replacing mature trees with new plantings.
Can you help me understand what the terminology or acronyms used in i-Tree mean?
From DBH to gross carbon sequestration - many common i-Tree and urban forestry terms are described in our i-Tree Glossary. For more advanced terms or concepts, refer to Understanding i-Tree for a comprehensive overview of the science and methods behind the i-Tree tools.
