What is i-Tree?: i-Tree is a suite of software tools developed to help users—whether municipal foresters or commercial arborists—identify and manage the structure, function, and value of urban tree populations. Created by the USDA Forest Service and its cooperators, Davey Resource Group and the National Arbor Day Foundation, the i-Tree suite brings together inventory and assessment tools in a single, free and supported environment. Users are provided with step-by-step processes for conducting an ecosystem analysis with UFORE (Urban Forest Effects Model) or a street tree analysis with STRATUM (Street Tree Resource Assessment Tool for Urban forest Managers). Compatible software utilities are included as well: MCTI (Mobile Community Tree Inventory), Storm Damage Assessment Protocol, Tree Inventory PDA Utility, Sample Inventory Generator, and an automated Report Writer. One year into a 10-year initiative, this coming summer (2006) will mark the initial public release of i-Tree.

Workshop overview: A training-of-the-trainers approach will provide participants with the expertise, familiarity, and tools to present, encourage and manage i-Tree's use in the communities they serve. During this hands-on workshop, users will gain experience in working with the software and conducting an i-Tree analysis start-to-finish—from inventory to data analysis to reporting results. Presentation and advocacy tools will be demonstrated that participants can use to promote i-Tree use among their own constituents.

Who should attend?: This 2-day workshop is designed for state, regional and volunteer urban & community foresters, extension foresters, or local urban forestry leaders (e.g., municipal, non-profit, or consulting urban foresters) who want to be involved with the dissemination and use of i-Tree. Participants should have 1) the ability and desire to conduct further i-Tree outreach and training, or 2) the ability and desire to use and provide feedback on i-Tree components utilized at the local level.

Too far to travel?: Additional i-Tree regional workshops are planned. In 2006, other scheduled workshops will be held in the South (Clemson, SC; March 21-22) and Midwest (Minneapolis, MN; November 14-17). Workshops are currently being scheduled for other regions in 2007 and beyond.
