 Assessing Street Tree Populations
Performing a Sample Inventory Project
STRATUM sample inventory projects are typically conducted in cities where a complete street tree inventory is not feasible due to limited resources. Street tree sampling provides a cost-effective means to capture a snapshot of the resource structure, how it functions, its value, and management needs. Where sampling is an option, it can be used as a starting point for municipal tree planning and management by providing the necessary information for decision making. Only sample inventories following simple random sampling conventions are compatible with STRATUM. The i-Tree Sample Inventory Generator provides a simple, expedient method for drawing a sample inventory in any U.S. community.

For accurate estimations, typical sample inventories will require a sampling intensity of 3% to 6% of a community's total public street miles. Smaller communities will require sampling at the higher end of this scale.
